Lovely, you’re going on holiday to Marbella this summer, spend the whole day relaxing on the beach, enjoying Sintillate outdoor parties, and shopping in Puerto Banús while being exposed to the hot Mediterranean sun. Did you know that sunscreen could be bad for your health?
“You can better choose a sunscreen without Oxybenzone”
You are taught from childhood to protect yourself as well as possible against that persistent UV radiation. But the fact is, too much sunscreen can be harmful to your health, according to Danish scientists.
Oxybenzone and cancer
There are the wildest stories published about the UV filter called oxybenzone that can be found in most sunscreen and makeup products.
EWG and other toxicology experts are concerned about the link between oxybenzone with damaging cells that can lead to skin cancer and even hormone disruption.
“Mineral sunscreens are made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, usually in the form of nanoparticles. There is good evidence that little if any zinc or titanium particles penetrate the skin to reach living tissues. Thus, mineral sunscreens tend to rate better than chemical sunscreens in the EWG sunscreen database.
“However, it is important that manufacturers use forms of minerals that are coated with inert chemicals to reduce photoactivity. If they don’t, users could suffer skin damage. To date, no such problems have been reported, writes The Environmental Working Group’s mission.
If you follow the advice of the World Health Organization and confidently coat your skin every square centimeter with 2 milligrams of cream you block Vitamin D.
Danish scientists conducted a laboratory research involving volunteers to be covered with sunscreen and exposed them to UV-B radiation for a few weeks.
The thinner the layer, the more vitamin D in their blood was found. In the group that was thick greased vitamin D was found to be virtually blocked.
Vitamin D is crucial for our human body because it is responsible for absorption of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc and multiple other biological effects.
