On March 6, 2013, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager John Podesta received e-mails from Wendy Abrams, that there are strong concerns about aspartame, which is labeled as NutraSweet.
Wendy Abrams, founder of Cool Globes, had an e-mail exchange about NutraSweet. Abrams expressed her concern about the addition of aspartame to chocolate in American schools.
“They have decided to replace chocolate milk in school lunches (because kids drink choc vs white milk in a 4 to 1 ratio) so they are replacing the chocolate milk with chocolate milk with Nutrasweet, and insisting that it not be labeled as such because kids don’t like to drink something that is labeled low cal,” she wrote.
She also wrote about her own negative experiences with aspartame. In college she drank much drinks containing Nutrasweets, she developed exercise induced asthma and severe headaches as a result.
Abrams noted that a friend of hers worked at the University of Chicago. Colleagues might have told her that during investigations NutraSweet literally caused holes in the brains of mice.
A second person, one Don Kennedy, said also to be worried about artificial sweeteners. She explained that aspartame was initially not approved by the US Food Authority FDA.
When the manufacturer of aspartame, Searle, again filed an application, the sweetener threatened once again failed to get through the test.
After the inauguration of Ronald Reagan as president —Arthur Hull Hayes jr., became the new commissioner of FDA. He was nominated by Donald Rumsfeld, former director of Searle.
Hull made personally sure that aspartame FDA became approved and exchanged later FDA for Burston-Marsteller, the public relations firm Searle and Monsanto, the controversial chemical giant that took over Searle in 1987 for $2.7 billion, making Searle a wholly owned subsidiary of Monsanto.
Researchers recently discovered at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science that artificial sweeteners may alter the metabolism of sugar, which can cause diabetes.
